Playwright Statement
Lakeplay is set in the Spring of 2020. It's about an adult couple in the midst of a difficult passage in their lives, namely reproduction in an era of increasing isolation and fragmentation. Set in a rustic cabin overlooking a huge lake in upstate NY, the couple encounters the cabin caretaker, a mysterious figure who acts as a catalyst. Themes in the play include fertility, sexuality and reproduction, becoming parents, covid era, and the blur between what is natural and what is artificial. The play addresses these serious and current issues, but with a great deal of humanity and humor.
The decision to become a parent (or not) is a passage that nearly all humans must face, consciously or otherwise. I believe that major life passages like this stir up all the sediment from the depths of ourselves. I wanted to put the depth of a relationship-in-peril on the stage in a way that captured the complicated layers that exist between people.
The play has has been developed on the page over the course of four years and has had support from the Farm Theater and the Drilling Company, two well established companies in NYC. It had its first public reading in the fall of 2023 and a second developmental reading in the spring of 2024 and has been enthusiastically received.
We have the show’s director and cast in place as well as the theater location and dates.
I hope you’ll consider supporting us and joining us for this exciting artistic journey.
